Overview What to Expect

Day of Surgery
A friend or relative should accompany you to the medical center. Please be sure to arrive on time so your surgery may begin at the scheduled time.

  • Please report to the hospital in-patient unit.
  • Routine tests are done, including: temperature, blood pressure and pulse checks. You will be checked for any recent medical problems and asked to sign consent or permit forms prior to surgery.
  • You will change into a gown and be asked to remove jewelry, dentures, glasses or hearing aids.
  • A final check is done of your medical history and condition. Sometimes medication is administered to help you relax before the surgery.
  • Anesthesia is used during your surgery. Depending on the procedure scheduled, local anesthesia (which numbs a specific part of the body) or general anesthesia (which puts you to “sleep”) is used.
  • Your surgery is performed in the operating suite.
  • You may go to the recovery room following your surgery. Nursing staff will check your temperature, pulse and blood pressure frequently.
  • Homecare instructions for your recovery will be provided to you by your physician or surgery staff. Please listen carefully and ask questions about anything you do not understand.
  • Please let a friend or relative take you home. You will not be allowed to drive or travel by yourself because you may still be feeling the effects of the anesthesia.
  • Rest is an important part of preparation and recovery; therefore, visitors are limited to two for each patient’s room.

Trousdale Medical Center is fully accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.

Your Responsibilities

Instructions from your physician may vary according to the type of surgical procedure and anesthetic which will be used during your surgery. You must not eat, drink, chew gum or smoke after 12:00 midnight the day before your surgery.

Arranging Transportation
You must have someone pick you up after your surgery. You will not be allowed to drive or travel by yourself because you may still be feeling the effects of the anesthesia.

Personal Valuables
All jewelry and other valuables should be left at home. You may wear glasses and dentures, but they will need to be removed prior to your procedure.

Dress Casually
Choose articles of clothing that will not fit tightly and cause discomfort to the surgical area, such as a front-button blouse or shirt. Minimal makeup is recommended.
